I am the author of Street art London, 100 UK graffiti artists, 100 European graffiti artists and I was a major promoter for this art in the early beginnings. Dirty Pilot – West Coast Spraycan artists

Dirty Pilot presents West coast Spraycan artists, Curated by Jim Prigoff co author of Spraycan art

This month we welcome some of the best of the West Coast Spray Can Artists . Curated by Jim Prigoff, Co Author of SprayCan Art. Artists include: CHAZ BOJORQUEZ, VYAL, MEAR ONE, MAN ONE, SLICK, BRETT COOK – DIZNEY, CRAYONE, BAM, ESTRIA, VOGUE, EON 7, WERC, ISAIAS CROW , AMANDA LYNN, MEME, GLOW, AGANA, CODAK, MARK BODE, and DEFER

The stories of the early 1970s graffiti taggers like TAKI 183 in NYC and CORNBREAD and TOP CAT in Philadelphia have been recited hundreds of times. As style and content developed and the art moved to the trains, writers began to be visible outside of NYC.

With the publication of subway art in 1984, visibility spread around the world. In addition, a few writers moved from NY to LA in the mid 1980s and brought with the the street culture.

By the time spraycan art appeared in 1987, San Francisco had already developed a few outstanding crews and WCA and others were beginning to decorate the walls of LA. The rest is history.

West Coast style benefited from the fact that it not only became a stop for European writers, but also was a visiting place for youth from Australia and Japan.

In recent years DirtyPilot has featured the now famous early NY subway writers who had moved to canvas and whose work was sought after by collectors and museums. For the first time, DirtyPilot features in this month’s gallery a look at West Coast artists whose work is being shown in galleries and added to important collections. Enjoy – Jim Prigoff
